The Sam Eig Jewish Studies Initiative is an interdisciplinary effort to establish a program in Jewish Studies at Georgetown University. The  initiative goal is to create a distinctive research and teaching agenda that will expose students to elements of Jewish civilization, history, and religion while serving as a major scholarly center for the study of modern Jewish cultural and political identities.
A generous grant from the Eig family enabled the university to create a full-time, three-year  director position. Beginning with the Fall 2000 semester, the director launched a new course, Introduction to Jewish Studies, which is designed to serve as the curricular foundation for a future undergraduate minor and major in the field. Until the time that a formal Jewish Studies Program is created, students have the opportunity to take Jewish Studies courses in a variety of disciplines including Hebrew Language, History, Theology, Government, and English.
