The Hebraic Section of the Library of Congress has long been recognized as one of the world's foremost centers for the study of Hebrew and Yiddish materials.  Today, the section houses works in Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, Judeo-Persian, Judeo-Arabic, Aramaic, Syriac, Coptic, and Amharic. The section's holdings are especially strong in the areas of the Bible and rabbinics, liturgy, Hebrew language and literature, responsa, and Jewish history. Extensive collections of printed editions of Passover Haggadot have been assembled, as well as a comprehensive collection of Holocaust memorial volumes.

Of particular interest to genealogists is the Library's comprehensive collection of Holocaust memorial volumes documenting Jewish life in Eastern Europe before the Second World War.

Long recognized as one of the world's leading research centers for the study of Hebraica and Judaica, the Hebraic Section serves as the Library's primary access point for reference and research activities related to the Ancient Near East, pre-Islamic Egypt, Biblical Studies, Jewish Studies, and ancient and modern Israel. The section has custody of materials in a variety of formats in Hebrew and its cognates, including Yiddish, Ladino, Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Persian, as well as Amharic, Coptic, and Syriac.

Program Details:

Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30-5/ Closed Saturday, Sunday and Federal holidays

Person In Charge: Senior Reference Librarian:Dr. Michael Grunberger

Eligibility: Any one over age of 18 can use the library . Need to be registered with Library of Congress. High schoolers with teacher letter

Fees: Registration is done in Madison Bldg Room 140. No charge to use the material. Material does not circulate-can't take it out
