STAR (Synagogues: Transformation and Renewal) is a philanthropic partnership of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation, Jewish Life Network/Steinhardt Foundation and The Samuel Bronfman Foundation. 

Founded in 1999, STAR fosters innovation among synagogues in reaching out to all kinds of Jews.  STAR has launched two national programs:
STAR is proud to introduce its flagship program: The Synaplex Initiative

Most Jews know synagogue primarily as Beit Tefilah, or House of Prayer. But synagogue is also Beit Midrash – House of Learning, and Beit Knesset – House of Gathering. 
Synaplex is a flexible format for enriching communal celebration of Shabbat by bringing together all three functions of the synagogue.
Synagogues may apply to participate in the Synaplex Initiative by invitation only; to inquire, send us e-mail. STAR supports Synaplex synagogues through the creation of a creative network of innovative programs; outreach materials synagogues can use to communicate with their audiences; and matching funds for additional outreach and communications efforts. Over the three years in which a synagogue is formally engaged in STAR’s Synaplex program, STAR supports the synagogue’s efforts to develop and fund it own innovative programs to take the organization into the future.

Professional Education for Excellence in Rabbis (PEER)
A dynamic Jewish future requires leaders with a compelling spiritual vision they can communicate effectively. At the same time, leaders need key skills and resources in nonprofit management. PEER is structured to provide development in all these key areas.

Over the course of one year, PEER rabbis attend program retreats and participate in online learning programs to sharpen and communicate their vision of rabbinic leadership, learn skills that will serve them throughout their rabbinate, connect with professional resources and enhance their ability to imagine the future of synagogue life. 

Up to 20 rabbis, two to five years following their ordination, may participate in PEER each year. STAR is now accepting applications for 2003; please contact us to request an application or nominate a rabbi for application.

STAR provides all planning, funding and implementation of PEER events and resources. Additional funding, in the form of grants, may be available to PEER participants who seek to create innovative programs in their congregations.
