Mission
The Mentors, Inc. mission is to increase the graduation rates and success of Washington, D.C.’s public high school students by pairing them with caring adult volunteers in structured and enriched mentoring relationships that promote their personal, academic and career development.

Our Program
Mentors, inc. creates and supports mentoring relationships for students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in any traditional or charter public junior or senior high school.  We provide access to enrichment opportunities in the areas of college preparation and career exploration, community service and life skills development.  Graduating seniors are eligible for scholarships and all students and their mentors have access to free or low-cost tickets to local sports events, museums, concerts and other cultural events.  They also receive our weekly newsletter of events and opportunities – including scholarship information – in and around Washington, D.C.

Mentors, Inc has matched nearly 4,000 students with mentors since 1987.
In 2005, Mentors, Inc. awarded over $160,000 in college scholarships to protégés.
Each year, well over 90% of our students in the program graduate high school, compared to 64% of their peers citywide; 80% go on to postsecondary education.

History
Mentors, Inc has provided mentors for students enrolled in Washington, D.C.’s public junior and senior high schools for 20 years.  The organization was founded by a parent and a principal – Shayne Schneider and Betty Brooks – who recognized the powerful untapped resource that the large pool of highly educated professionals in D.C. represented for students in the city’s public schools.  While the city’s professional community is among the most educated and affluent in the United States, its public schools serve students who are largely poor, from families with little experience with higher education, and who have few successful adult role models.  The program is now the only citywide high school mentoring program in Washington, DC.

Our founders started by matching a single mentor with a group of students and arranging meetings for them at one school.  However, as the program gained recognition, they were able to match students with mentors, one-on-one, by gender, based on shared interests and compatibility, and allowed them to choose their meeting places and activities.  Since its inception, the program has matched nearly 4,000 students with adult professionals.  
For many of our students, having a mentor is truly transformative; the mentor is often the first adult who takes an interest in their well-being and the experience increases their personal aspirations, provides them with new perspectives and eposes them to a range 
of experiences that are unavailable in their own communities.
