The Shema V'Ezer Religious School program offers Judaic education to children and young adults with disabilities, ages 6 to 21, who may not benefit from a traditional religious school setting. Children with mental retardation, severe learning disabilities, visual or auditory impairment, mobility impairment, behavioral disorders and/or multiple disabilities may participate in Sunday morning classes at the JCC.
The content for each class is designed for a specific age group. The curriculum includes study of Shabbat and Jewish holidays, Hebrew prayers, words and songs, the Jewish life cycle, customs and ceremonies, Israel , Bible, synagogue skills and current Jewish events. Bar/bat mitzvah preparation can be included, as appropriate. An individualized plan is developed for each student. Teachers are highly skilled and have experience working with students with a wide range of disabilities. Emphasis is placed on helping students develop and maintain a positive Jewish identity. Through these efforts, which include experiential learning, participants gain a concept of Jewish history and values and are able to identify as part of a larger group of people with whom they have a great deal in common. This is important for young people who have felt “different” for most of their lives. Ongoing registration is accepted. To receive application materials, contact coordinator.
