This organization support the 500-bed Shaare Tzedek Medical Center which is located on a 14-acre site opposite Mt. Herzl. The 1,300,000 square-foot complex consists of ten linked buildings comprising ten floors. The lower three levels were built underground - not in response to construction requirements, but due to practical foresight. Even in times of military attack, the hospital is able to function; vital areas such as operating theaters, the Emergency Room, Pharmacy, and medical and sterile supplies are below ground. The Medical Center contains in-patient facilities, a comprehensive range of therapeutic and diagnostic services, out-patient clinics, teaching facilities for medical students and a research center. There is also a 350-seat Auditorium, which hosts international and local symposia, colloquia and workshops.
