Help for Students in Distress (program sponsored through funds donated by The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington)

The ORT Junior and Senior High Schools in Afula cater to many students from disadvantaged sections of the population, including immigrants from Ethiopia and other areas. For some, there is not sufficient money in the family budget to pay for food during the day; these children have to be provided with meal vouchers. Some do not come to school because they are embarrassed at being seen in their worn out clothing; in these cases, clothing vouchers are provided. A number of students have to be provided with books and equipment, others need assistance to pay for transportation. Many of the students' families are unable to meet the cost of the parental contribution. All these cases are handled sensitively and professionally by the school staff, but funds are urgently required to cover this emergency situation. The school has 195 students in need of some level of assistance. (The school rolls are 738 in the Junior High School and 850 in the Senior High School.)
